Why Sandhill Farms Genetics?
When you can accurately predict how an animal will breed, you are then ready to help your customers make improvements and thus more money
Predictability
In order to provide a more predictable and reliable product, we have unofficially tested more sires in the National Reference Sire Program than anyone in the world. More accurate EPD’s lower your risk by more precisely predicting your bull’s genetics. For 40 years we have reported all our weights on all calves born and have retained ownership of our steers and cull heifers through the finishing phase. We value the data we receive to improve the next generations selection. Bottom line, this increases the accuracy of the EPDs we provide to you and improves the ability to accurately select cattle from our herd to improve your herd.
Fertility and Longevity
11.5% increase in fertility per year was the observed improvement of Sandhill sired baldy females over their solid black herd mates. When using spring 2026 prices, the math showed a $418/ head value for the Sandhill sired females. A 50 head cowherd would show over $20,000 per year in profit.
Breed Leading Carcass
Through using actual carcass measurements and scan records we have selected for increasing the value of the end product. Thus more profit for you the rancher and increasing consumer acceptance. We can prove via our own herd’s data or customer data, that we can help your program as well. Our cowherd’s average EPDs for Carcass Weight, Marbling & Ribeye Area rank in the top 3% of the entire breed.
Maternal
The Sandhill cow herd has an average Baldy Maternal Index ranking the herd in the top 10% of the breed. This index uses longevity, mature cow weight, dry matter intake and milk. The correlated traits of teat and udder are also improved.
Calving Ease
Years ago, Calving Ease was one of the biggest hurdles cattlemen needed to get over. We can say with utmost confidence, that hurdle is in the rearview mirror. A neighbor calved out 96 first calf heifers all pasture bred to Sandhill bulls. Of the normal presentations, he only assisted 1, and that was due to being late for his son’s basketball game. The Sandhill cowherd average Calving Ease Direct ranks in the top 17% of the breed.
